When it comes to ground covers, the question of the correct planting distance is not only dependent on the needs and growth rate of the plants. Since larger areas can also result in enormous numbers, it is sometimes also a question of the acquisition costs of the young plants.

A plant with a strong drive to spread
The large periwinkle (Vinca major) and small periwinkle (Vinca minor) generally have little tendency to form seeds and only under certain conditions. Nevertheless, propagation is relatively easy, even for laypeople, since cuttings can be made easily or rooted offshoots can be separated from the mother plants. If you are patient, about 5 to 8 plants per m2 will suffice, as Vinca minor will quickly spread to all interstices in a suitable location.
Factors such as location and the gardener's ideal
Last but not least, the growth rate of Vinca minor also depends on the following factors:
- lighting conditions
- soil condition
- moisturizing
- of the exact sort
If you want a closed carpet of plants very quickly, you can also plant around 8 to 12 young plants per m2.
tips
At locations that are not very shady, there can sometimes be strong competitive pressure from various “weeds”. In this case, during the first few months you should regularly remove "invaders" between the periwinkle plants and cover the soil with settled compost as fertilizer.
