In contrast to the large-flowered prunella, the small prunella is not very popular in the garden. The small plant tends to spread into lawns as well, crowding out grass plants and disrupting the overall appearance of the lawn. Measures to combat Lesser Accentor.

The Lesser Accentor is not as delicate as it looks: it crowds out lawn plants with amazing persistence

How do you get rid of Lesser Sunflowers in the Lawn?

The Lesser Accentor is certainly not as bad as other lawn weeds, such as horsetail, goutweed or couch grass. If you value a beautiful green lawn, you should fight the plant as soon as possible. The following measures must be taken:

  • Mow the lawn before the Common Accentor blooms
  • pull out existing plants by hand
  • Scarify lawn in spring
  • Shade the lawn with foil

Do not let small brownelles seed

The Lesser Accentor mainly spreads via runners that run above ground, but new plants also develop from the seeds.

Therefore, mow the lawn regularly so that the small prunella cannot start flowers in the first place.

Fight small brownella by hand

To pull out small brownelles by hand, you only need a small hoe to loosen the soil a little. Pull plant completely out of the ground. Look for runners and remove those as well. Keep in mind that a new plant can sprout from every plant residue.

Small prunella thrives particularly well on hardened soil. You should therefore always aerate the lawn in the spring. In doing so, you pull out existing plants and foothills.

Cover lawn with foil

If the Lesser Accentor has spread so much that you can't keep up with pulling it out by hand, try an old gardener's trick.

For a couple of weeks, lay opaque sheeting on the lawn and secure it with rocks or tent pegs. Due to the lack of light, the small prunella dies. The lawn also turns brown, but recovers quickly from this treatment.

tips

The Lesser Accentor is often planted in the garden as a ground cover under trees and shrubs. It forms dense carpets there and flowers from June to August. The pretty white, red and purple flowers are a real insect magnet.
