Before a monotonous green area - now an idyllic tulip meadow. You can achieve this transformation without complex redesign work. Here we will tell you how to spice up your spring garden with a picturesque combination of tulip beds and meadows.

A tulip meadow makes the heart beat faster in spring

Location and planting time set the course

In order for the tulips to join the grasses in spring, there must be no lack of sunlight. Therefore, only designate a green area as a tulip meadow if it is in a sunny and warm location. Furthermore, it should be neither a dry nor a wet meadow. Ideally, the soil is fresh, humic and sandy-loamy.

The tulip bulbs take their place in the green from mid-October at the earliest. The soil temperature should be 10 degrees Celsius and below so that the flower bulbs do not sprout prematurely.

Two planting techniques to choose from - elegant or down-to-earth

The nature of the green area and the number of tulip bulbs to be planted determine the planting technique. Will the tulip meadow function as a lawn for the rest of the year or will it retain its natural character? Accordingly, we recommend one of the following two approaches:

Variant 1: artistically elegant

  • Cut the sod with a spade in a U-shape
  • Fold over the green to loosen the soil with the rake
  • Dig planting holes at a distance of 10-15 cm
  • Plant the tulip bulbs so deep that the layer of soil is twice as high as the bulbs are large
  • Water first and then fold the sod back in and press down

Variant 2: Robust, down-to-earth

  • Punch 12-15 cm deep holes in the meadow with an iron rod
  • Insert the tulip bulbs in it with the tip up
  • Fill with loose compost, press down and water

The tulip meadow is just as easy to care for. The rainy spring season makes watering superfluous. If you work a little compost into the soil as part of the planting, the nutrient supply is ensured. It is important to note that you should wait until the leaves are fully drawn in before mowing.

tips

So that the colorful dance of flowers in a tulip meadow is repeated every year, it is important to choose the right tulip varieties. The robust wild and dwarf tulips are the first choice in this regard. When it comes to longevity, Darwin tulips can hold a candle to their wild counterparts. Fosteriana and Greigii Tulipa also convince with the ability to naturalize over time.
