Their apparent resemblance to kitchen onions rightly raises the question of toxin content. We wanted to know exactly and consulted experts. Read about the toxicity of tulip bulbs here.

Tulip bulbs should be handled with gloves

Tuliposides spoil the pleasure of tasting

Tulips are permeated with health-threatening glycosides. The Poison Center of the University Hospital in Bonn draws attention to this. The tuliposides cause symptoms of poisoning with intentional and unintentional consumption. However, nausea and vomiting only occur when large amounts of tulip bulbs are consumed. However, the experts do not want to commit themselves to quantifying the critical dose. Against this background, we recommend refraining from a tasting.

In case of skin contact there is a risk of dermatitis

If you plant a large number of tulip bulbs in autumn, the sap could trigger dermatitis after direct contact with your skin. We therefore recommend the following precautionary measures:

  • Carry out all planting and care work on tulips with gloves
  • The same precautions are taken when cutting tulips for the vase

PVC gloves are unsuitable for this purpose. Please use a product made of nitrile rubber, as this material does not tear easily.
