The dog rose is quite easy to propagate. In principle, it even multiplies by itself if you don't prevent it. You also have the choice between targeted sowing, propagation by runners or planting cuttings.

Propagation via seeds is expensive but possible

Propagation by seed

The targeted sowing is the most difficult way of propagating the dog rose, because the seeds must first be thoroughly cleaned of the pulp, dried and then treated with cold before they can be sown. If this effort is not too great for you, then sow the seeds in a pot with seed compost after they have been in the refrigerator for about four weeks.

Cover the seeds with some soil and slightly moisten them. Then put the pot in a moderately warm place. The temperature should be between 10 and 25 °C. Now you should have a lot of patience, because germination can take a few months.

Propagation by stolons

Since the dog rose forms numerous foothills, it can be easily propagated in this way. Just use a sharp spade to snip off a few runners from your dog rose in spring or fall. Shorten the root pieces by about a third and plant them in the desired location. Keep the soil moist at first, this will make it easier for the new dog rose to grow.

Propagation by cuttings

It is best to cut cuttings from strong annual shoots in late autumn. The sticks should be about 20 cm long. Make a straight cut at the top, about 1-2 cm above a bud. At the bottom, cut the cutting diagonally and just below a bud.

The cuttings are stored in moist sand with the highest possible humidity throughout the winter. Only in the spring is it cut again at the bottom and planted in loose soil. This can be done in a pot but also directly while cooking.

The best propagation tips for the dog rose:

  • Sowing possible but tedious
  • easiest way of propagation: root suckers
  • easy to implement: propagation by cuttings

tips

The easiest way is to propagate by runners, which even a beginner gardener can do quite well.
