Flower pots are often sold in spring, in which forget-me-nots grow alongside other plants. At first glance, this looks very nice. However, it should not be forgotten that forget-me-nots are not houseplants. They only stay in the room for a short time.

Forget-me-not only thrives in the room for a short time

The air in the room is not ideal for forget-me-nots. It's too warm, the humidity is too high or too low and the pot is usually much too small.

The conditions in the room favor the pest infestation. Fungal diseases are also more common at room temperature and may infect other plants in the room.

You can only achieve a really beautiful flower if you grow forget-me-nots outdoors. You should therefore never keep forget-me-nots as a houseplant.

Is it worth planting forget-me-nots?

If you have been given or bought a forget-me-not as a houseplant, it is best to plant the flower in a bucket or, even better, in the garden.

In this way, the forget-me-not grows and blooms much longer.

However, after the flowering period, the splendor is over here as well. Most forget-me-not plants are biennial and consumed after flowering. Planting out is therefore only worthwhile for special species or if you want to try to harvest seeds for propagation.

When planting out the forget-me-not, prepare a partially shaded spot with rich, well-drained soil.

When planting in the bucket, make sure there is a sufficiently large drainage hole so that the irrigation water can drain and there is no waterlogging.

Water the forget-me-not regularly to keep the soil from drying out completely.

Forget-me-not multiply

So that you can continue to enjoy your forget-me-not gift, you can try to multiply it. It will then flower next year.

Take cuttings with a piece of root hanging from the bottom and place them in a glass of water. Roots form there.

When enough roots have grown, plant the cutting in a pot and overwinter it in a cool, bright spot until next spring.

tips

Forget-me-not plants bought in hardware stores do not always form germinable seeds. They are pre-treated to flower earlier. It is more likely to propagate the plant by root division or cuttings.
