Like all pampas grasses, the variety with the pink flower fronds is hardy. Sub-zero temperatures don't bother the ornamental grass that much, but too much moisture does. Therefore, pink pampas grass should be prepared for winter in the fall.

Pink pampas grass is conditionally hardy

Pink pampas grass is native to America and is therefore adapted to cold winters. What harms ornamental grass much more than frost is wetness. In winter it is much more humid than in summer due to frequent downpours and snow.

If the rootstock of the pink pampas grass, the eyrie, becomes too wet, it begins to rot and the ornamental grass dies.

How to protect pink pampas grass from getting wet in winter

Protecting the eyrie of pink pampas grass from getting wet is quite simple. Do not cut off the stalks and flower fronds in autumn, but leave them on the plant.

The fronds can be loosely tied together at the top with a ribbon and thus provide perfect protection against too much moisture.

Incidentally, the fronds tied together are also a very decorative garden ornament in winter.

Overwinter pink pampas grass in a bucket

Pink pampas grass can be grown well in a bucket as long as it has sufficient capacity. If you care for the colored ornamental grass in a pot, it is not hardy. This is because the soil in the bucket freezes faster than outdoors.

To overwinter the pampas grass, place the bucket in a frost-free but cool place. All pitches that are sheltered from the wind are suitable for this:

  • sheltered corner on the terrace
  • covered balcony corner
  • bright basement
  • unheated conservatory
  • cool greenhouse

If the location of the bucket is covered, you do not need to tie the plant together. However, place the pot on an insulating base and wrap the bucket with bubble wrap. In addition, protection from fir branches or brushwood makes sense.

tips

You can plant pink pampas grass until autumn. However, you should definitely provide winter protection if you plant late. The decorative ornamental grass is only hardy when it has been able to settle in at the location.
