If you are looking for a fast-growing privacy screen that does not require too much maintenance, pampas grass is often recommended. The decorative ornamental grass is indeed a good privacy screen, but it is only really opaque in summer and early autumn.

Because of its height and rapid growth, pampas grass makes a good privacy screen

Benefits of pampas grass as a privacy screen

Pampas grass works well as a privacy screen because it is

  • fast growing
  • decorative
  • easy-care
  • does not form rhizomes

As a location, very sunny places are particularly suitable. It shouldn't be too windy, as the long fronds of grass can break off if there is a strong draft.

Pampas grass needs to be watered and fertilized regularly. The pampas grass hedge is cut only once, in spring.

Pampas grass does not form rhizomes

Unlike bamboo, pampas grass does not form rhizomes. However, the nest gets thicker and thicker over the years and should be divided from time to time. It is not necessary to create a root barrier.

Do not plant pampas grass too densely so that the grasses can spread and develop many shoots.

Not opaque all year round

Pampas grass has one disadvantage compared to other hedge plants. Like all ornamental grasses, the shoots dry up in winter and have to be cut down in spring.

It takes a few weeks for the new shoots to grow high enough to form a dense screen. The ornamental grass rewards the gardener with beautiful flowers that look like fronds.

Before winter, the fronds must be tied together to protect the plant from winter wet. The ornamental grass hedge is then no longer completely opaque, but still extremely decorative.

Varieties that are suitable as privacy screens

In principle, any pampas grass can be planted as a privacy screen. All varieties are fast-growing and form dense clusters from the center of which tall white, yellow or pink flowers grow. The following varieties are often planted as a hedge:

  • White pampas grass - up to 250 cm in height
  • Pink feather - up to 200 cm in height
  • Sunningdale Silver - up to 250cm

tips

If you want to plant a privacy screen that is dense all year round, consider a beech or hornbeam hedge. The leaves of these deciduous trees usually remain on the tree until new growth occurs.
