Beech trees are very robust trees that are rarely attacked by pests in a favorable location. Pests are more common in beech hedges because the space is not always suitable and the trees are very dense. Recognize and fight pests of the common beech.

Pests and diseases should be treated as soon as possible

These pests give beech trees a hard time

  • beech mealybugs
  • gall mosquitoes
  • spider mites
  • mushrooms

Beech mealybugs are more common

Beech wool lice, also known as decorative beech lice, show up as sticky residues on the leaves and young shoots. The residue is called honeydew and is a good food source for bees and ants.

A heavy infestation causes the leaves to wither and fall off. In addition, the growth of the tree is hindered.

If the pests are not too numerous, try washing the beech with a decoction of field horsetail or nettle. Otherwise, cutting and, in the case of a very severe infestation, a commercially available sharpening agent will help. However, this should only be used in an emergency and as sparingly as possible.

Gall mosquitoes are harmless

Gall midges are indicated by small bumps on the leaves. They don't damage the tree. If the infestation bothers you, cut off affected shoots.

You should dispose of leaves after the waste, as the pests overwinter in them.

Fight spider mites

Spider mites appear when it is very dry. They cover the leaves with fine nets and cause them to die off.

If possible, increase the humidity. Sometimes an old household remedy helps: Spray the affected branches with water and pull a plastic bag over them.

In the case of a very severe infestation, it is worth using predatory mites, which are available in specialist garden shops.

What to do if the beech is attacked by fungi?

Powdery mildew and downy mildew occur when it is either too dry or too wet. As a sign you will find mottled leaves in downy mildew or leaves covered with a white coating in powdery mildew.

You can treat lighter infestations with fresh diluted milk.

In the case of a severe infestation, cut off all affected parts and dispose of them in the dustbin.

tips

Beech trees have very smooth bark and hardly any cork formation. Pests can therefore only penetrate if the bark is injured. To prevent pest infestations, apply artificial bark to larger wounds after cutting.
