The morning glory is a magnificent morning glory plant, which is valued by many garden owners in contrast to the much smaller flowering bindweed and field bindweed. Most gardeners grow the plants themselves from seed as it requires little maintenance.

Peculiarities of the seeds
Morning glory seeds usually have a brownish surface and are oval to elongated, but quite irregular in shape. Before sowing, they are ideally placed in lukewarm water for a few hours to soak in order to accelerate the germination phase. The following factors are important when sowing:
- Dark germ (the seeds should be covered with about 1/2 inch of soil)
- Germination period: 10 - 14 days
- optimal germination temperature: 18 - 20 degrees Celsius
The seeds are relatively small, containing about 40 seeds in one gram of seed. For a head start in spring, morning glories are usually preferred indoors, since the germination temperature is exactly right here on the windowsill in spring.
Grow young plants from seed indoors
In order that the plants already have a certain shoot length after the ice saints in May, morning glories are usually sown on the windowsill from the end of March. To avoid later pricking out the tender little plants with the even more delicate roots, 3 to 4 seeds should always be sown together in a rotting plant pot. A nutritious and water-storing substrate is also important when sowing, so that the plants do not dry out so quickly in their most sunny locations. After the last night frosts and a few days of hourly hardening outdoors, the morning glory can be planted out in the garden. You can place these in the ground at a slight angle in the direction of the respective trellis to make it easier to climb onto the climbing aid.
Harvest seeds from the plants yourself
You can harvest the seeds for the next season directly from your own plants if you don't remove wilted flowers right away. The funnel flowers, which only bloom for a short time, quickly form green seed capsules, which become increasingly brownish over time. As soon as these appear brittle and dried out, the seeds inside the capsules are fully mature. Then take a plastic bag or a screw-top jar to catch as many seeds as possible when collecting the seed pods. After removing the remains of the capsules, allow the seeds to dry a little before storing them in airtight packaging.
tips
Because morning glory seeds contain a particularly high dose of hallucinogenic toxins, keep them clearly labeled indoors and out of the reach of children.
