A sunny location has been selected, compost is ready to enrich the soil - now you can get started and the ornamental onions can be planted. But when is the best time to plant it?

Ornamental onions are best planted in the fall

Autumn - perfect planting time

You should plant the onion from the ornamental onion in autumn. The period between mid-September and November is ideal. Then the onion has enough time to form roots. It can also develop a shoot tip over the winter. In the spring, the flowering season begins.

If you only plant the ornamental onion in spring, you have to expect that the flower may fail between May and June. For late-flowering species, however, an alternative is to wait until spring to plant them. Some species then flower in August.

If it still doesn't bloom…

But sometimes the ornamental onion does not bloom in the spring, even though it was planted early in the fall. The cause may be that the bulb was already diseased or has gradually rotted away due to too much moisture in the soil. There may also be other reasons behind it, such as forgetting/overlooking the onion when hooking weeds.

This is to be considered when planting the onion:

  • plant three times as deep as the bulb is high (10 to 15 cm)
  • Maintain a distance of 25 cm
  • Place in the ground with the tip up and the roots down
  • only use plump and firm onions
  • plant in loose, well drained soil

Attention: There are also ornamental onion varieties that are not hardy! They are only planted in spring or dug up in autumn and overwintered indoors.
