Which location is suitable for this perennial?
The ideal location for the lungwort is under deciduous trees or in bushes. It needs a place where it is protected from the blazing sun. The reason is, among others, that its leaves wither too quickly in the sun. So choose a semi-shady to shady location for your lungwort!
Which substrate does lungwort benefit from?
Since the lungwort particularly likes to grow in forests and has adapted to the conditions there, it needs a humus-rich subsoil. Also advantageous are:
- high nutrient content
- good permeability
- a not too dry, but rather slightly moist environment
- like to enrich the soil with compost before planting
When and how do you sow the lungwort?
The easiest way is to sow the lungwort. The optimal period for sowing is between March and April. The seeds are cold and light germinators. Therefore, sow them no more than 0.5 cm deep! If the soil is moist, it will take 2 to 4 weeks to germinate.
Which plant neighbors are suitable?
This perennial looks fantastic alongside many other flowering perennials. Combinations with contrasting spring flowers look good. Here are a few examples of suitable plant neighbors:
- cowslips
- lily of the valley
- daffodils
- tulips
- elf flowers
- golden berries
- zinnias
- primroses
- hosts
- daisies
- Seal of Solomon
- cup mallows
- ferns
- Bergenia
When does lungwort bloom?
Lungwort often blooms as early as March - but by April at the latest. Its flowers take on different colors as the flowering period progresses. First they are colored pink, then purple and finally blue. After flowering, pruning should be done as a maintenance measure.
tips
Since the lungwort is at its best in small groups, you should not plant it alone. However, when planting in groups, keep a distance of at least 20 cm between the individual specimens!
