The not hardy Gazanie, also known as midday gold or sun thaler, not only loves a sunny location, this plant also needs it so that its flowers open. They close again in the evening and remain closed on cloudy days.

Gazania loves the sun

Be sure to plant your Gazania in a sunny spot with well-drained and rather dry soil. It fits perfectly in a rock garden and even grows in the cracks of a dry stone wall. The Sonnentaler does not tolerate waterlogging at all, so you should loosen up very firm soil and possibly work in a drainage layer. Pour the midday gold only moderately and preferably in the morning or evening hours.

Gazania on the balcony

Because it loves the sun so much, the Gazania is very suitable as a plant for a south-facing balcony. It can also be combined very well with other summer flowers. Be sure to lay a drainage layer of old pottery shards, coarse gravel or expanded clay (€19.73) in the balcony box or planter. Use potting soil mixed with sand or special cactus soil.

Fertilizer recommendations vary significantly from once a year to once a week. They are of course very dependent on the existing soil conditions and the willingness of the Gazania to bloom. Carefully approach the correct dosage. If the midday gold gets too much fertilizer, it will form more leaves and fewer flowers.

The best location tips for Gazania:

  • as full sun as possible
  • preferably sheltered from the rain
  • well-drained nutrient-rich soil
  • ideal for balcony planting
  • for potted plants: mix potting soil with sand or use cactus soil

tips

If your Gazania is not flowering as desired, then it is either lacking sun or has been given too much fertilizer.
