You can certainly grow the colored nettle yourself from seeds. However, this is quite a lengthy affair. If you enjoy it, have the necessary space and a little patience, then you should give it a try.

Colored nettles can also be grown from seeds

Where can you get seeds of the coleus?

The Coleus has very decorative foliage, but less beautiful flowers. That is why they are often removed at the outset. In this way, the plant does not "wast" energy on flower and seed formation and can instead concentrate on lush growth. Collecting seeds from your own plants is usually not done.

You can usually get the seeds of the colored nettle in a quite colorful mixture with different color variants. If you only want to draw a special color, then you have a relatively large effort. Because the colored nettle only reveals the secret of its color when it has developed about five pairs of leaves.

The sowing of the coleus

The seeds of the colored nettle are very small and fine. Scatter them carefully on a container with good potting soil. Gently mist the soil with a water spray to avoid washing away the seeds. As light germs, they must not be covered with soil.

In a mini greenhouse or under a transparent film, the required germination temperature of at least 20 °C is easier to maintain than open in the room. When the first cotyledons appear, you should remove the foil immediately. However, this will take about two to three weeks.

Is it also possible to propagate the colored nettle in a different way?

Sowing the coleus is certainly not recommended for the impatient. Propagation by cuttings is much easier and also in a much shorter time. So you quickly have new colored nettles for your garden or windowsill. Take the cuttings of about 10 cm in length with at least two to three pairs of leaves. The cut shoots should not be too fresh, but rather robust.

Worth knowing about the seeds of the coleus:

  • light germinator
  • tiny
  • Germination time: about 14 - 21 days
  • Germination temperature: at least 20 °C
