Geraniums are perennial balcony flowers that can be overwintered without too much effort and then come back all the more beautiful next spring. There are several options for overwintering, but you should not leave the very frost-sensitive plants outdoors.

Overwinter geraniums in flower boxes
Although geraniums can be kept bare-rooted and even in a dark cellar over the winter, you also have other options. One of them is the variant of overwintering the geraniums in the flower box (€16.99). In this case, however, you should place the flowers in a cool - optimal temperatures between five and ten degrees Celsius - and bright place. The rule of thumb is that geraniums need more light the warmer they are in winter.
Prepare geraniums for winter
Overwintering also requires some preparation so that your plants get through the cold season well.
- The plants are cut back in mid/late October
- however, a radical cut is not necessary
- First of all, remove the weak and long shoots
- and flowers and buds
- and shorten the rest.
- Repot the geraniums from the old substrate
- and loosely cover the roots with a mixture of potting soil and sand
- The substrate should always be kept slightly moist.
- There is no fertilization in winter.
tips
Before you get the plants out of hibernation in the spring, you cut them back again. In this case, the horny shoots that have grown over the winter are removed.
