Apparently, red, pink and white geraniums are particularly popular, as such plants can be found on many balconies and in many gardens. The color palette of these popular summer flowers - which, by the way, are botanically correctly called pelargoniums - has expanded significantly in recent years. In addition to the colors mentioned, there are now also purple, salmon-colored (sometimes classified as "orange") and bicolored varieties in both the hanging and standing species.

Geraniums come in many colors: from snow-white to deep red

Red geraniums

Red geraniums shine in a wide variety of color gradations, from a rather light red like the "Elara" variety to a deep dark red like "Tomke", "Fire Merlot" or "Burgundy". Red varieties are also common in scented geraniums, noble geraniums (also known as "English geraniums") and leaf geraniums. This coloring is probably the most common in geraniums.

Standing red geraniums

Erect-growing, red geraniums are, for example, the varieties "Elara", "Samantha", "Stadt Bern", "Bernd" and "Herma", with all the variants mentioned except for "Stadt Bern" having filled flower heads.

Hanging red geraniums

Popular semi-hanging varieties with red, double flowers are "Merlot", "Burgundy", "Dark Red", "Ruben", "Tomke" and "Falko". If you prefer hanging geraniums with single flowers, the "Balcony Red" variety is the right choice for you.

Scented geraniums with red flowers

The varieties Pelargonium "Apple Mint", Pelargonium "Apricot Dieter", Pelargonium "Aurore Unique" (these even have black markings), Pelargonium "Bernhelm" (rose-flowered), Pelargonium "Black Night" (with particularly dark, deep red to almost black flowers), "Black Pearl" (small, dark red flowers) or "Cherry" (cherry red flowers) in various shades of red.

Pink geraniums

Pink geraniums are also very popular. These shades of color range from light pink to deep, dark pink. This color is also common in most geranium species.

Upright pink geraniums

Popular varieties in this category are "Anne" (light pink), "Katarina" (strong pink), "Fiona" (dark pink) and "Lady Ramona" (strong pink with a dark eye).

Pink hanging geraniums

A very beautiful, rather semi-hanging pink flowering variety is "Deep Rose", while "Shocking Pink" is a classic hanging geranium.

Pink scented geraniums

Among the scented geraniums, Pelargonium "Atomic Snowflake" is particularly impressive with small, pink flowers and a delicate citrus scent.

Geraniums in salmon / orange

Very beautiful, salmon-colored geranium varieties are "Rosetta" and "Wiebke", both of which grow upright and have double flowers. This shade is still very rarely seen in geraniums and is therefore particularly interesting.

Purple geraniums

Another rather unusual sight are purple-colored geraniums such as the "Quirin" (very dark purple flowers) and "Lavender" (light purple) varieties - a real eye-catcher!

White Geraniums

White geraniums look particularly good planted alone or as a contrast to brightly colored specimens. Particularly beautiful varieties are "Cassandra" (upright) and "Glacier white" (hanging).

Bicolor Geraniums

Two-toned geraniums are a real feast for the eyes. These look particularly beautiful in the combination of red and white ("Nixe", red with a white border, and "Arctic Red") and in pink with darker markings ("Lady Ramona", "Katinka", "Kristiana", "Vineta") . Among the scented geraniums is u. "Beromünster" two-tone. Here the leaves are pure white with a magenta pattern. Noble geraniums are also often two-tone.

tips

The so-called decorative leaf geraniums inspire less with lush flowers in beautiful colors, but with all the more interesting foliage.
