Propagating indoor plants? Anyone who has tried this experiment knows that these mostly tropical plants can be quite difficult to reproduce. But with the Schefflera, propagation by cuttings is very easy…

Propagation via cuttings is very promising

Cut the cuttings: when, with what and how?

If you shorten your schefflera or cut it back vigorously, you will get shoots that you can use for the cuttings propagation. It is important that they are healthy.

You can use different parts of the schefflera as cuttings. So you can cut leaf cuttings, head cuttings or stem cuttings. The best time to cut the cuttings is in spring between January and March or in late summer.

Stem cuttings are cut with pruning shears. Head cuttings and leaf cuttings can be cut off with a knife. Make sure the cuttings are 10 to 20 cm long! The leaf cuttings should keep their long stem - this is used for rooting.

Water or stick the cuttings

This is how it goes on:

  • remove lower leaves from head and stem cuttings
  • Leave 3 to 4 leaves
  • either prepare a glass with water or pots with potting soil
  • Place the cuttings in the jar or stick them 3 to 5 cm deep in the pots
  • for the glass version: add charcoal ash (prevents rot)
  • with the pot variant: water and keep moist in the near future

Duration until rooting

Now it's time to wait! Depending on the ambient temperature (ideally 20°C) and light conditions, it can take anywhere from 4 to 12 weeks for the cuttings to root. If the rooting is successful, you will see the white root threads in the glass. With the pot cuttings, you can recognize the rooting by the new shoots/leaves.

Repot and care for cuttings

After the cuttings are rooted, they are repotted. Repot the cuttings that you have grown in pots when they have a new growth of 3 to 5 cm. When the young plants have grown to a height of 10 cm, they can be fertilized for the first time. From now on, it is important not to neglect watering.

tips

Cultivation of the cuttings of the radiant macaw in pots is preferable to cultivation in glass, as the fine roots are not damaged by placing them in the ground.
