With a growth rate of up to 30 cm per year, the radiant macaw can be described as fast-growing. When she puts on such speed she needs a lot of space, not only on the surface but also in her pot. How do you repot this houseplant properly and when?

The Schefflera grows very quickly and needs enough space to do so

Repot - from spring to summer

After the winter, this houseplant is the ideal time to repot. Start the procedure in early spring (from February) and by summer (May/June) at the latest! It is best to repot the schefflera before it shows its new shoots.

How can you tell if the Schefflera should be repotted?

Not every Schefflera needs to be repotted. Repotting depends on growth. This in turn depends on the location, the nutrient content of the substrate and the age of the plant, among other things. Even a schefflera that is grown in a pot as a bonsai needs to be repotted from time to time.

If one or more of the following is true, it's time to repot:

  • the pot is too small in relation to the schefflera
  • the soil in the pot has sagged
  • the roots of the plant stick out at the top
  • the roots of the plant look out of the drainage holes below
  • growth is stunted

Procedure for repotting

Time to take action! Gently remove your radiant ara from the pot, being careful not to damage the shoots! Now the old earth is being shaken off. If this is difficult, you can crumble them roughly with your hands. Since the view of the roots should now be clear, dead roots can be cut off.

The next step is to prepare a pot slightly larger than the old pot with fresh soil. A drainage is created at the very bottom so that the remaining irrigation water can drain off quickly. Pebbles or expanded clay, for example, are suitable for drainage.(19.73€) The root ball of the Schefflera is placed in there. The top of the bale is covered with humus-rich soil! Then: press and pour.

tips

Immediately after repotting, you can cut back the schefflera.
