The Alstroemeria is considered conditionally hardy, at least with increasing age. However, it does not survive long, harsh winters unprotected. You are on the safe side if you decide to overwinter your lily in a frost-free environment.
Lilies are not hardy and must be overwintered indoorsAfter all, the Alstroemeria is native to the subtropics and is therefore not used to Central European winters. However, some breeders have now developed hybrids that are better suited to this region. It is not for nothing that the lily is a popular garden plant and cut flower with interesting symbolism. This plant stands for friendship, affection, devotion and connectedness.
How to care for the Alstroemeria in winter?
If you have had your lily for a few years, then it is no longer as sensitive to frost as a young plant. If you live in a mild area, then you can certainly leave your plant in the garden. Cover the alkali lily with a thick layer of foliage or straw to protect it from severe frosts. If you have planted the Alstroemeria in a container, it is better to overwinter it indoors.
However, it is better to overwinter young plants and particularly sensitive species in a frost-free place. This is especially true if you live in a particularly harsh area. The Alstroemeria comes from subtropical regions and loves warmth, even cold winds don't like it. It is best to overwinter these plants in a greenhouse or in the conservatory. If you don't have either of these, place the lily in a cool room.
Temperatures of around 12 - 15 °C are ideal. In the spring, these plants should then be slowly hardened off again by initially only standing outside during the day. Although alkalis do not need fertilizer in winter and less water than in summer, you should definitely not forget to water them completely.
The most important winter tips for the Alstroemeria:
