The thrift or beach grass (Armeria maritima) forms grassy cushion mats up to about 10 centimeters high. In May and June, the tough, around 20 centimeters high stalks with the tiny flowers arranged in a spherical umbel appear. Basically, thrifts thrive in almost any location - provided it is sunny and the soil is permeable.

Thrifts love the sun

Thrift needs sun

Due to their origin, thrifts prefer a location in full sun, although this can also be drafty and windy. A sunny spot with well-drained soil is the best prevention against rot. Due to the generally very good vitality of the plants, one is often tempted to establish them in partial or full shade. Then, however, there is a risk that fungal diseases will set in and/or the plants will turn yellow from the middle. Heavy winter wetness should also be avoided as much as possible. In principle, any soil is suitable for thrifts, provided that it has been loosened up well with sand if necessary.

tips

Excellent companion plants are other cushion plants from the rock garden, such as bluebells (Campanula), carnations (Dianthus) or thyme (Thymus).
