Aloe vera thrives best in a bright location. The leafy succulent, which originates from the deserts of Africa, also tolerates full sun on the south-facing window sill or in the conservatory, where less robust plants would die.

The aloe vera should be as bright as possible; however, if there is too much direct sun, it will develop brown leaves

In the countries of origin and cultivation with tropical and subtropical climates, aloe vera grows outdoors. In Germany, the frost-sensitive succulent thrives as a houseplant on sunny south-facing windows, in greenhouses and conservatories. Even during the hibernation, it should not be exposed to temperatures below 10° Celsius.

What should be considered when choosing a location?

The fast-growing aloe vera requires a relatively large amount of space. One should be aware that the plant needs a larger pot every few years. Otherwise, when choosing a location:

  • a bright, sunny place in the house,
  • in summer also in the garden or on the balcony,
  • not too sunny if a nice green color of the indoor aloe is desired.

In full sun, aloe vera leaves can turn reddish-brown. You can see that the tips of the leaves are turning brown and drying up. This is a natural phenomenon of overexposure to the sun and should not worry you. When the power of the sun subsides, the leaves turn green again.

tips

An impressive phenomenon is Aloe arborescens - an aloe species with many rosette-like side and side branches and curved leaves. In an optimal location, it can reach a height of several meters.
