The slightly poisonous cloudberry is known to many plant lovers. It impresses all year round with its foliage, in autumn and winter with its decorative berries and in summer with its flowers. Does it tolerate frost or does it need winter protection?

Without protection she gets through the winter time
It is part of the heather family, the cloudberry. It is originally from parts of North America, Canada and the Himalayas. Due to her homeland, she gets along well with frost.
The checkerberry is hardy in this country. Therefore, you do not need to protect your cloudberry in winter - regardless of whether it is outdoors or in a pot on the balcony. It can handle frost down to -20 °C without any problems.
Protect in extreme times
Should temperatures fall to extremes, winter protection is not a mistake:
- as a precaution, also protect when planting new plants in autumn
- do not put in and overwinter there (too warm)
- suitable protection: fir branches and spruce branches
- the branches also serve as protection against frost
- for pot culture, wrap with fleece and place against the house wall
Stop fertilizing after August!
It is extremely important that you do not fertilize your checkerberry for too long! Fertilization should be stopped from August. If you fertilize afterwards, you prevent the shoots from maturing/lignifying. Unripe shoots are sensitive to frost and frost damage is not long in coming.
Beware of winter wet and dry conditions
Even in winter, care must not be neglected. Make sure that the checkerberry is not exposed to winter moisture. Drought is also deadly. Check the soil regularly for cloudberries in the pot and, if necessary, water sparingly on frost-free days. The evergreen foliage evaporates water even in winter…
The fruits grow in the winter time
The ornamental fruits of the cloudberry form from October. They remain with their bright red color until spring. They withstand the cold and don't usually fall off. This is what makes the cloudberry such a valuable wintertime plant!
tips
A bit of sun in winter doesn't hurt. On the contrary: a portion of sun causes the evergreen foliage of the checkerberry to turn reddish to brownish.
