You don't necessarily have to plant a Hosta in the garden. Such a magnificent plant can also be in a bucket, for example on the balcony, terrace or roof terrace. But what is unavoidable, sensible and avoidable in pot culture?

All hosta varieties are also suitable for keeping in pots

Suitable locations for the container plant

Hostas are the ideal choice if you want to beautify a shady balcony, a cool terrace, a drab house entrance or stair sections. Unlike most other perennials, they prefer to grow in shade to partial shade. The humidity can be high. Full sun locations for a bucket culture are generally not recommended.

Which varieties are suitable for pot culture?

In general, all hosta varieties can be planted in tubs. Before buying and planting, find out how big each variety can get and choose the bucket or clay pot depending on that. The Hosta 'Golden Tiara' is a rather small variety that also tolerates some sun due to its light green-yellow foliage.

Casting plays the main role

Not much care is required. But casting is crucial. Make sure there is good drainage in the pot when planting! Hostas need to be watered regularly and plentifully. They do not tolerate dry substrate. Water the soil as soon as the top layer of soil has dried.

Fertilizing - in second place

Fertilizing plays a secondary role compared to watering, which is necessary for survival. It is sufficient if you fertilize your hosta every 2 to 4 weeks between April and September. You can use a liquid fertilizer, long-term fertilizer or horn meal for this.

Winterize in the fall

Hostas in the pot should be overwintered. How to do it below:

  • October: remove old leaves
  • Wrap the planter with fleece or jute or coconut mat
  • put on the wall of the house
  • remove the protective layer from the end of February
  • February/March: Repot every 2 years and divide every 3 to 4 years
  • Use parts to multiply

tips

Keep this piece of wisdom in mind when choosing a strain: the thicker the hosta variety's leaves, the more liquid it retains (and needs) and the better it tolerates sunlight.
