Hostas lead a shadowy existence - one might think so, since they prefer to be in shady places. However, with their large, attractively colored foliage and longevity, they are not perennials to be overlooked. So that your hosta keeps its beautiful appearance for a long time, you should not underestimate the care!

Hostas often fall prey to slugs

How often should the hosta be watered?

Hostas are considered to be extremely water-requiring. However, since they are usually in the shade or partial shade, they do not need to be watered often. If you also apply a layer of bark mulch over your root area, you only need to water it in dry times.

If your hosta is in a bucket, watering is more important. First of all, it should be ensured that the bucket has good drainage so that waterlogging cannot occur. Water the hostas in the bucket regularly and keep the soil moderately moist. Even in winter, the earth must not dry out!

Did hostas need fertilizer to look good?

Young specimens of the hosta in particular should be fertilized once or twice a year so that they grow quickly and have large, strong foliage. The first application of fertilizer takes place in spring around April. The second application of fertilizer can take place after flowering until autumn. Compost and guano fertilizers are suitable for fertilizing.

Which pests like to eat hostas?

In addition to the less common lily beetles, it is the snails that like to eat the fresh shoots of hostas:

  • Check for snail infestation, especially during sprouting
  • prefer to water in the morning rather than in the evening
  • apply slug pellets (7.49€) if necessary
  • collect snails

Does a cut make sense?

This is worth noting when cutting:

  • not mandatory
  • moves in over the winter
  • For visual purposes, cut away stems and withered leaves in autumn
  • regularly remove wilted leaves
  • cut off old inflorescences
  • Better: Leave old leaves in autumn as they serve as frost protection
  • Remove old parts of plants in spring at the latest

tips

Every four to five years you should divide your hostas in the spring to rejuvenate them (they can be propagated at the same time).
