A rarity, that is the diptam. It originally comes from Central Europe and does very well in local gardens. Its white-pink flowers, vaguely reminiscent of mallow, smell wonderfully of vanilla and citrus fruits. But how is the diptam planted correctly?

Which location should it be?
Its natural occurrence is heathland, dry meadows and areas at the edge of woods. As a result, the location should be sunny to semi-shady. A warm and sheltered location is ideal. A shady place should not be an option.
Which substrate is suitable for growth?
The substrate to its roots should also arouse feelings of home. Before planting, the soil should always be loosened. Subsequently, the following characteristics are crucial for good growth, health and rich flowering:
- well drained
- moderately nutritious
- humorous
- calcareous
- like rocky
- dry environment
When and how is diptam planted?
Fall is a good time to plant. Alternatively, early spring is a good time. Don't worry: the diptam is hardy and survives frost. It can be planted directly in the bed or grown in a pot.
The planting distance should be at least 50 cm. Pour a portion of compost into the planting hole to give the diptam a start. After planting, the soil should first be kept moist. Attention: Dittany is often nibbled on by snails!
Next to which plants does diptam look good?
Due to its tall and straight growth and its large number of beautiful flowers, the diptam is perfect as a solitaire. But it also cuts a fine figure next to other plants. These include, among others:
- rosemary
- thyme
- sage
- irises
- ornamental grasses
- sweet thistles
- germander
How is the sowing done?
The sowing of the easy-care diptam is difficult. The main reason is that this is a cold germ.
The seeds to be sown in autumn need a cool period with temperatures between 0 and 4 °C for at least 2 weeks. You can help by storing the seeds in the refrigerator for several weeks.
