While an ornamental quince is not necessarily the first choice when you are just starting to grow bonsai, the plant is perfectly suitable for the purpose. It looks gorgeous, especially during the flowering period.

The ornamental quince is quite suitable as a bonsai, but is rather not for beginners

How do you make a bonsai from a decorative quince?

Before you start work, you have to decide whether your bonsai should be outside in the garden or indoors. Because outdoors, a bonsai can grow to about 90 cm tall, but you may have less space indoors. Depending on the size, you then choose the planter.

You can buy the ornamental quince either as a blank, as a finished bonsai or as a garden plant and then cut it into shape yourself. On the one hand, this is a question of price and, on the other hand, it depends on your skills and desires. So now it's time for the cutting.

How do you prune a bonsai?

Bonsai come in different shapes, for example double trunk, multiple trunk, freely upright and sloping forms or the cascade form. In principle, the ornamental quince is suitable for all forms, although the downward-growing cascade and semi-cascade forms are quite difficult to grow. Which shape did you choose? Specialist literature or the Internet will explain the exact cut step by step.

How to care for a bonsai?

In the warm season, your ornamental quince bonsai likes to stand outside on the balcony or terrace. He likes the sunlight and the warmth. But make sure that the flowers do not get frost, otherwise they will fall off. It is better to put the plant back in the apartment overnight in spring.

Water your ornamental quince plentifully in summer. If it is in the sun, it may need water several times a day. Alternatively, you can place the plant in partial shade, but it will form fewer flower buds there. After flowering, fertilize your ornamental quince regularly until the foliage falls off in the fall. Commercially available fertilizer cones can make this work easier for you.
