The Deutzia (botanical: Deutzia) does not grow particularly fast. She can therefore do without a regular cut. However, it may be worth pruning the shrub after flowering. Sometimes the Deutzia blooms a second time in autumn.

The Deutzia should be cut after flowering

Stimulate second flowering by cutting

Deutzia are among the weak-growing woody plants. Many gardeners therefore do without an annual cut. This saves a lot of work when the Deutzia are planted as a hedge.

If you care for the shrub as a single plant in the garden, you should definitely grab the scissors in spring. Cutting back immediately after flowering will encourage the formation of new flowers in the fall. You can then enjoy the pretty clusters of flowers twice a year.

Cut back the Deutzia after flowering

  • Cut back by a third
  • Remove weak shoots
  • Shorten shoots that are too long
  • Thin out the shrub

The best time to cut Deutzia is June, beginning of July, when the shrub has withered.

Cut the faded shoots down to a third. Always make the cut just above a bud that is facing outwards.

When cutting, make sure that the Deutzia retains a nice shape. Remove weak shoots and cut off protruding branches. Thin out branches that are too close together so that the center of the bush gets enough light.

Remove old wood when making regeneration cuts

After two to three years, it's time to do a makeover pruning. Remove all old, lignified shoots. Cut the old branches as close to the root neck as possible. You usually need a pruning saw for this.

The rejuvenation cut should then be done every two years to encourage the Deutzia to form young shoots.

Opinions differ on when the ideal time for a rejuvenation cut is. Some gardeners advise performing the trimming pruning in late winter, while others recommend pruning right after flowering.

Cut cuttings for propagation

If you want to plant an entire hedge of deutzia, take cuttings in the summer to propagate the plant. For this, use a shoot that grows in the middle of the bush.

Cut off a piece 20 to 30 cm long that is not quite lignified. The lower leaves are removed and the cuttings are placed in a pot with sterile potting soil.

The pot must be bright but not in direct sunlight. Keep the soil evenly moist to allow roots to form. Avoid too much moisture, because then the cuttings will rot.

tips

The non-toxic Deutzia are very robust and easy to care for. The soil should be permeable and rich in nutrients. However, the hardy shrub only blooms profusely if it receives enough sun at its location.
