In their natural habitat, clematis thrive along the edge of the forest, where they climb up the trees. The climbing plants owe their middle name clematis to this circumstance. This is how you create an ideal environment for the beautiful flowers:

- For facade greening, plant clematis on a wall facing south-west, west or east
- In the garden place the clematis in the shelter of tall trees and shrubs
- Protect yourself from the blazing midday sun on the balcony and terrace under a canopy or awning
As much as the clematis likes to be caressed by the sun's rays on its head, it still likes a shaded foot. Since this circumstance restricts the choice of location, resourceful hobby gardeners use this trick: On the tree disc of a clematis, weakly competitive sub-plants are placed, such as blue cushions, marigolds, purple bells or non-trailing nasturtiums.
