Moles keep getting lost in your garden and you want to lock the cute digger out once and for all? Then a wire barrier or mole screen is a great idea! We will explain how to lay them correctly and what you should pay attention to.

Mole as a Beneficial
As hated as it is by many, the mole is actually a beneficial creature because:
- The mole keeps the garden pest-free, because grubs, insect larvae and other things are its favorite food.
- The mole digs up the ground, providing good ventilation.
- The mole keeps "real" pests such as voles or rats away.
So think twice if you really want to get rid of this natural pest killer.
Before you lay the mole wire
Before you set about keeping the mole out, you need to make sure there are no moles INSIDE. Under no circumstances should you catch or even kill the mole in the garden. Therefore, you should only lay the wire if you do not have a mole in the garden. Otherwise you have to sell it first.
Two options for laying mole wire
Mole wire or mole screen is a fine-mesh net made of plastic or metal. It can be laid horizontally or vertically.
Lay the wire against the mole horizontally
Horizontal laying is ideal if you are laying a new lawn, for example.
- Lift up 10cm of soil and lay the mole screen over the entire area.
- If several individual grids are used, they must overlap.
- Then cover the mole net with soil and sow your lawn.
This variant is particularly practical if you are laying rolled turf: simply place the mole grid directly under the lawn - done.
Alternatively, you can lay the wire on the ground and wait for the lawn to cover it.
Set mole screens vertically in the ground
This is the usual variant, because unless you are laying new turf, the other option is quite expensive. When laying vertically, it is important that you do not leave any loopholes for the mole - neither below nor above the ground.
- Mark the course of your lock - it should be seamless and end where it begins.
- Now dig the trench to a depth of at least 50 cm, preferably 100 cm.
- Place the mole screen in the ditch. It should protrude a few centimeters at the top.
- If several parts are used, they should overlap by several centimeters and be connected with wire.
- Finally, fill up the wire.
- Build a small fence around the overhang of the mole wire to prevent the mole from getting into your yard from above ground.
tips
If you also want to keep voles away, you need to use special vole wire that is stronger and tighter in mesh.
