If you have a mole in your garden and want to get rid of it, look for gentle methods of expulsion, because killing or hunting is prohibited. Certain plants are said to keep moles away, which is why nature-loving and animal-friendly gardeners like to choose this variant. But how promising are plants against moles and which ones help?

Plants against moles

Moles are carnivores and will only nibble on plants accidentally. Plants therefore only have a deterrent effect on the cute, quite useful little animals if they smell badly, because moles have very sensitive noses. Planting strongly scented flowers, herbs and bulbs is said to keep the mole away. Recommended plants are:

  • Kaiserkrone (strong smelling tuber)
  • Kitchen herbs such as mint, basil or thyme
  • leeks, garlic or onions
  • Incarvillea, simply called "mole deterrent plant" by the operators - effectiveness unknown
  • Spurge Family

tips

Moles are actually a boon to any garden, keeping pests away and maintaining good soil quality. Therefore, think carefully about whether you really want to keep this beneficial insect away.

How effective are plants against moles?

Plants are not suitable for repelling a mole that has already settled in. The effect is too weak to evict a mole from its beloved home. However, if you combine the plants with other means such as buttermilk, pinwheels or other noises, the endeavor can be crowned with success.
To make the garden as unattractive to a mole as possible, strategically planting mole-deterrent plants is a good idea.

Drive away moles with plant manure

More effective and, above all, faster than planting bulbs and flowers is using plant manure to get rid of a mole. The liquid manure stinks enough in itself, but to increase the effect even more, you can use strong-smelling plants such as wormwood, walnut leaves, onions, tomato shoots or horseradish as a basis. The latter also stings the mole in the nose.

start liquid manure

All you need to prepare the liquid manure is a large bucket, water and the plant material. Then proceed as follows:

  1. Roughly chop the plant material and fill the bucket halfway with it.
  2. Fill with water to just below the brim.
  3. Place the bucket in a sheltered spot away from the house and patio to avoid the smell. Do not add rock flour (14.13€) to reduce the smell! You need the stink for your mole.
  4. After two to three weeks, when the liquid manure is no longer foaming, it is ready. However, you can also use the liquid manure earlier for your purposes, provided it stinks enough.

Use plant manure against moles

When the liquid manure is ready, select several well-spaced molehills, dig up the aisle a little and pour in a good amount of plant liquid manure. Repeat the process after three to four days when the odor has subsided. If possible, choose rain-free days to prevent the rain from washing out the manure.
