Unfortunately, unwashed grapes contain many pesticides and germs that can be harmful to health. Therefore, it is important to wash the delicious fruit very thoroughly to remove all substances that could have a negative effect on health.

Grapes from conventional cultivation in particular should be washed very thoroughly

Wash the grapes just before eating

A white, waxy coating, the so-called scent film, protects grapes from drying out. It is a sign of the freshness of the fruit and should definitely be present when you buy it. Don't wash it off right away, even at home, as this will keep the fruit fresher for longer.

Wash grapes thoroughly

Just before consumption, you should then carefully clean the table grapes:

  1. Pluck off unsightly or moldy fruit.
  2. Rinse the grapes under running water.
  3. Use your fingers to rub each cluster clean.
  4. Drain on a tea towel for a few minutes and then gently pat dry.

Soak the grapes briefly

  1. Place the grapes in a bowl and fill with cold water. The fruit should be completely covered.
  2. Leave the grapes in it for five minutes.
  3. Remove and rinse again carefully under running water.
  4. Place on a clean kitchen towel, drain briefly and then carefully dry each grape. This means that the dissolved pollutants and germs stick to the kitchen towel.

This procedure thoroughly removes pesticides and germs. This method is particularly recommended when children eat the grapes.

Wash grapes in vinegar water

If you want to be absolutely sure that all bacteria and pesticides are washed off the fruit, you can clean them in vinegar water:

  1. Put room temperature water in a bowl and add a dash of vinegar.
  2. Put the grapes in for five minutes.
  3. Rinse the fruit thoroughly under running water.
  4. Place the grapes on a cloth, drain and then pat dry one by one.

tips

Occasionally one reads that one should wash grapes with soap or even washing-up liquid in order to really remove all pollutants. This is not recommended as these products contain chemical substances that stick to the fruit. These are extremely unhealthy and should not be consumed.
