Garden owners usually also have a heart for the feathered lodgers. Birdhouses can fulfill various functions here: In winter you can offer food in them. In the summer months, nesting boxes, also known as birdhouses, provide shelter.

A bird house must hang high enough and protected

Set up the feeder correctly

This aviary must not be too small, otherwise there will be competition for the food. Set it up like this:

  • Choose a spot where you can see the immediate area around the feeding station. This means that predators and domestic cats cannot sneak up on you unnoticed.
  • At a distance of about two meters there should be trees where the birds can find shelter.
  • Never hang bird feeders in close proximity to a pane as the animals may not see the glass and may fly in and injure themselves.
  • Place free-standing birdhouses on a smooth plastic or metal tube. Cats cannot climb this.
  • If you want to hang the house in a tree, attach it so that the distance to the trunk is at least 1.5 meters.

Assemble nest boxes correctly

It is also important for nesting boxes to be set up in such a way that predators and cats cannot reach them. Also pay attention to the following points:

  • The bird houses must be mounted in such a way that they do not overheat. A sheltered, partially shaded spot is ideal.
  • The entrance hole should ideally point to the south-east.
  • Wind and rain must not be able to penetrate the flight opening.
  • Young birds need rest. Therefore, do not hang the boxes directly on the garden path or next to the terrace.
  • Birds should be able to find shelter in trees near the nest box.
  • Place aviary for songbirds at a height of 1.5 to 2 meters, other nesting aids, depending on the size of the animals, at a height of 3 to 6 meters.
  • Always attach the bird houses to trees with an aluminum nail, as this does not damage the wood. Also attach a cuff, made from an old garden hose, for example. In order for the house to hang stably, secure it with a long bar.
  • If you would like to offer several birdhouses, a minimum distance of ten meters should be maintained between them.

tips

If a suspended bird house is not used for two breeding seasons, it is advisable to hang it in a different location.
