Pointed cabbage is characterized by very tender and soft leaves, which is why the vegetable does not keep for long. But because of the mild taste and the short growing season, the cabbage plant is very popular.

Early gardening season
Pointed cabbage is related to white cabbage and is characterized by a more delicate aroma. Its main season extends from May to October. This species is one of the cabbage varieties that are ready for harvest early. Under optimal conditions, the heads can be harvested until December, whereby the taste intensifies with increasing maturity and becomes stronger towards the end of the year.
Varieties overview:
- 'firstborn': early variety, grown from January, planted out in March and ready to harvest from May
- 'Caraflex tolerant' (F1): develops pointed heads that can be harvested from September
- 'calibros': Mixture of red and pointed cabbage harvested in autumn
cultivation
Since the cabbage is extremely fast-growing, spring is ideal for growing pointed cabbage. Under optimal conditions, the vegetables quickly produce their first yields.
cultivation
If you want to harvest early cabbage from May, you need to cultivate seeds on the bright window sill in January. The young plants may migrate to the garden bed from March. Planting in rows with a distance of 40 centimeters between the plants is recommended here.
Expectations
The cabbage plant needs as many hours of sunshine as possible to mature, which is why a full sun location is recommended. While they will tolerate shadier areas, harvests will be less bountiful in these areas. The subsoil is ideally well loosened and deep. It may be loamy and should provide sufficient nutrients, because pointed cabbage is a heavy feeder. If the soil is sandy, improve it with compost, manure and horn shavings.(32.93€)
maintenance
Nutrient requirements range in the medium to high ranges, so you should apply nitrogen and potassium-rich fertilizers regularly throughout the growing season. Keep the substrate evenly moist. Fluctuations cause the heads to burst open, which encourages pests and diseases. As hoe plants, the plants benefit from regular loosening of the top layer of soil. This measure is recommended as long as the leaves do not yet cover the ground.
tips
If the cabbage gives off a strong smell of sulfur when cooking, the crop was supplied with too much nitrogen during the growth phase. Stop fertilizing about a month before the planned harvest time.
harvest
With ideal weather conditions and good care, the first cabbages from the spring planting are ready to harvest from mid-May. As soon as the heads have reached a weight of 1.5 kilograms, start harvesting. Leave specimens that are smaller. The harvest window extends to the end of June. Don't wait too long, because pointed cabbage tends to burst with age. It becomes unsightly and has less durability.
