Lantana are at the top of the list of frost-sensitive container plants. Already early in autumn, tropical lantana want to go into the warmth. Optimal location qualities, exemplary care and proper wintering release Lantana in top form from the tricky winter time. Don't miss out on these winter tips.

Arrange and cut lantana
Prologue for the wintering of Lantana are timely clearing and moderate pruning. How to do it right:
- wintering: before the first frost, at the latest at night-time temperatures between 5° and 10° Celsius
- pruning: Cut back branches that have grown back in summer by half
- clean up: remove withered flowers and dried leaves
A slight pruning favors the course of hibernation. Because Lantana will shed its leaves in any case, you can remove the foliage before putting it away.
Optimal: Lantana light/temperate over the winter
The light and temperature conditions determine the state in which a lantana emerges from the winter. The summer sun worshiper cannot deny her preference for lots of light. So that Lantana can cope with the winter lack of light, cool temperatures are important. How to successfully winter Lantana:
- lighting conditions: bright with an ideal lux value of 1000 lx, not in full sun
- temperatures: around 8° Celsius (minimum 5° C, maximum 12° C)
There is a choice of hibernation for lantana: frost-free greenhouse, temperature-controlled conservatory, glazed terrace and hibernation tent with frost guard. In all cases, shade should be provided to protect lantana from direct sunlight during hibernation. Incidentally, many evergreen, tropical terrace plants that want to hibernate healthy in our latitudes agree in this regard.
Suboptimal: hibernate lantana dark/cool
Lanterns show their forgiving flexibility when there are no bright, temperate rooms available. If necessary, the exotic ornamental trees tolerate a dark winter location if the temperature is right. How to overwinter lantana in the basement:
- lighting conditions: shady to dark
- temperatures: constant at 5° to 8° Celsius
A location on the cold basement floor harbors the risk of cold feet for the already stressed lantana. Please place the pot on a block of wood or an inverted bucket filled with straw to prevent cold from creeping into the root ball.
Lantana in winter - care tips
After clearing, please stop the nutrient supply. From the end of February at the earliest, fertilize Lantana at half the concentration until cleared. Water lantana sparingly and in small sips in winter. An even, light soil moisture without waterlogging is desirable. As a practical aid, we recommend a watering indicator that you simply stick into the substrate. Spray the branches with room-warm water from time to time.
Outwinter Lantana
In February, the severe hibernation for Lantana ends. Lantana now get their central shape and thinning cut. Then repot the plants in fresh substrate. At the bright, warm window seat, the tropical beauties await the new season with fresh courage.
A two-week hardening phase prepares Lantana perfectly for the strong spring sun. From the beginning of May until after the ice saints, place lantana in a pot in a semi-shady spot on the balcony or terrace during the day.
tips
Lantana have an aversion to hard, chalky water any time of year. Always water and spray your lantana with collected rainwater, even in winter quarters.
