Orchids are not only decorative but also relatively sensitive when it comes to plant diseases. The Phalaenopsis or butterfly orchid is no exception. Some diseases can be treated, but unfortunately others cannot.

Stains on the leaves often indicate disease

What do butterfly orchids often suffer from?

The most common diseases in Phalaenopsis are sunburn and root rot. The former occurs easily when the Phalaenopsis is in a south-facing window with direct sunlight at midday. Root rot, on the other hand, is usually caused by overwatering. In both cases, however, it is easy to help if the damage is discovered early.

Leaf spot disease can sometimes be mistaken for sunburn, but it is caused by fungi of the genera Cercospora and Colletotrichum. When infested, yellowish, reddish, brown or black spots appear on the leaves, often with a dark border. In the case of the mosaic virus, spots appear initially only on the underside of the leaf. Infested plants are almost impossible to save.

Common diseases in Phalaenopsis:

  • leaf spot disease
  • Crease or accordion wax
  • mosaic virus
  • sunburn
  • black or root rot

How are sick Phalaenopsis treated?

Check the Phalaenopsis for visible pests and for wet roots. Pests can usually be controlled biologically. Cut off wet roots. Fungicides help against fungal pathogens, but only on slightly to moderately affected plants. It is best to cut off affected leaves immediately to prevent the pathogen from spreading. If the infestation has already progressed too far, treatment is often no longer successful.

Can I protect my Phalaenopsis from diseases?

You can prevent your Phalaenopsis from getting sick or being attacked by pests in the first place. The most important thing is a suitable location. It should be warm and bright, but not expose the Phalaenopsis to direct sun.

In addition to the location, good care is of course also important for healthy plants. In the case of the Phalaenopsis, this means moderate watering and careful use of fertilizer. Too much of both will harm the sensitive orchid, as will cold drafts.

tips

The first step in treating your Phalaenopsis is finding the cause. Only when you know what the plant is suffering from can you help it.
