Although indoor plants stay in the apartment all year round, many specimens have special requirements when it comes to care in winter. Find out here how to adapt basic requirements such as lighting conditions, watering quantity and fertilization to the cold season. With our tips, overwintering houseplants becomes child's play.

Indoor plants also need a lot of light in winter

Important care measures during the winter

With these tips, your indoor plants will get through the cold season unscathed:

Provide brightness

Short days and overcast skies deprive plants of important daylight. However, this is an indispensable factor for photosynthesis, in which the plant produces sugars for growth. It is therefore best to place your indoor plants on the windowsill where they can enjoy at least a few hours of sunshine a day. Plants that bloom in winter, such as cyclamen or azaleas, depend on this measure. Houseplants that are used to dark locations should also be placed in the light.

dust leaves

Dust is not only unhygienic and reduces the appearance of your houseplant, but is also considered an additional light stealer. Plants absorb light through their leaves. Moisten a soft cloth with decalcified water and wipe the plant with it.

restore humidity

When the temperatures are freezing outside, we at least want it to be cozy and warm in the house. However, the dry air from the heating is very difficult for your indoor plants. You can ensure sufficient humidity by regularly spraying the leaves with water. This is particularly important for houseplants of tropical origin.

Adjust pouring amount

The darker a plant is, the less water it usually needs. Since the plants lack light in winter anyway, you can reduce the watering without hesitation. Watering once a week is often sufficient.

Don't give fertilizer

During the winter, most plants retire into dormancy and do not invest energy in growth or flowering. As a result, the need for nutrients decreases. You should avoid fertilizers until March to avoid over-fertilization. Plants that bloom in winter are an exception. Whether fertilizer is required is usually noted in the care instructions on the plant label.

control

Dry heating air attracts pests. Check your indoor plants regularly for abnormalities.
