Especially when keeping bonsai, many plant lovers wish to transfer the significant properties of a plant to the next generation. For this reason, propagation via cuttings is better than any other method. Find out here how to proceed with the measure and what you need to watch out for.

The branch for the propagation by cuttings must be chosen with care

Advantages of growing from cuttings

Propagation by seed takes about a year longer than propagation by cuttings. In addition, you can be sure that your young plants will have the same genetic characteristics as the first generation. This is an important factor, especially in bonsai cultivation.

Interesting to know: In Japan, the country of origin of bonsai cultivation, propagation by cuttings is called "sashiki".

cut cuttings

Propagation by cuttings is not always successful. However, if you follow the tips below, the chances are very high.

choice of cuttings

The choice of cuttings should not be made solely by eye. In order for the shoots to form their own roots, they must not be too long. A length of 5 to 10 cm and a thickness of 2 to 5 mm is optimal.

The right time

In general, spring and summer are considered the ideal time to take cuttings, as the plants are now in the growth phase. But even if you decide to propagate later in the year, you can still remove them in late summer. By then the shoots should already be slightly lignified.

The right cutting technique

For cutting, choose a sharp knife or, even better, branch scissors. To protect the mother plant from germs, you should definitely disinfect your tool beforehand. Position the scissors at a 45° angle. The sloping interface increases the absorption capacity of water and minerals.

manual

You now have the ideal cutting in your hands, but what happens next? Very easy, with the following instructions:

  • Install drainage in your grow pot. Lava granules (€13.99) or gravel are particularly suitable.
  • Sprinkle a layer of bonsai substrate on top.
  • Put the cuttings about 3 cm deep in the ground.
  • Water the substrate well and keep it permanently moist over the next few days.

From cuttings to bonsai

Now you have to be patient. Once the cuttings are strong enough, transplant them to a larger pot. Unfortunately, you have to wait a few years before you can turn the new plants into a bonsai.
