Would you also like to try your hand at propagating cuttings? The young shoots are quickly cut, but what's next? Root in water first or plant directly in the ground? You can find useful information and helpful tips on this page.

Cuttings can also be rooted in the ground

Plant directly in the ground or leave to root?

To propagate cuttings, you have two options to choose from_

  • the rooting in the water glass
  • the rooting in the seed pot

A clear recommendation as to which of the two methods is more suitable cannot be made. Based on the following list of the respective advantages and disadvantages, you can decide for yourself which variant you prefer.

Rooting in a glass of water

  • Root growth can be observed
  • Root formation after a few days
  • Cuttings must be transplanted

Rooting in the substrate

  • Cuttings immediately get used to the soil
  • less risk of damaging the roots as no transplanting is required
  • takes longer

Note: No matter which of the two variants you choose, it is important that you never store the cuttings for long. The more they dry out, the lower the probability of successful root formation.

Planting Guide

If you have decided on the seed pot method (€16.68), proceed as follows:

  • Work drainage made of granules or gravel into a nursery pot
  • Give potting soil over it
  • If necessary, dip the cuttings with the cutting edge in rooting powder
  • poke a hole in the substrate with a narrow wooden stick
  • Insert the cuttings a few centimeters deep
  • water well

tips

We recommend willow water to accelerate root growth.

Select the appropriate substrate.

If the cuttings have not formed their own roots at the beginning, they cannot absorb any nutrients from the soil. Therefore save yourself the fertilizer application. Too many minerals will only change the pH of the soil and could even damage the delicate roots.

Ensure humidity

Young cuttings not only cannot draw nutrients from the soil, but also cannot absorb water. In the beginning, they have to get their fluid needs from moisture in the air. By putting a transparent film over the breeding pot, you improve the site conditions in that way. The cuttings absorb the condensed droplets via the leaves. To prevent mold from forming, you should air the film for a few hours every day.
