Not only the plants in the garden bed have to be pruned at some point, potted plants usually also need a pruning. When this should ideally take place depends on various factors. We would be happy to explain to you what these are.

When is the best time to cut?
The ideal time to cut potted plants cannot be generally determined. It varies from plant to plant and also depends on how your potted plants overwinter.
The pruning in spring
If you leave your potted plants outside in the garden over the winter, cutting them back in spring is usually the best solution. The (wilted) green is an ideal frost protection in winter, which you should not do without. Do not cut sensitive plants too early, but only when no significant night frosts are to be expected.
The pruning in autumn
If your potted plants are to spend the winter in a frost-free winter quarters, then the plants can also be cut in the autumn. If the space in the winter quarters is (very) limited, then this may even be necessary. But you should then make sure that you do not bring your potted plants outside too early in spring. For frost-sensitive plants, be sure to wait for the ice saints.
Special case diseased plants
Sick potted plants should be cut back immediately if necessary. If you do not remove parts of the plant that are infected with fungus, for example, in good time, the plant may die. Even dry twigs and shoots can be cut off at any time of the year.
What should I watch out for when pruning?
When pruning, always work with clean and sharp tools and always cut in a manner appropriate to the species. There are a variety of different potted plants, some of which can be stimulated to flower a second time by a targeted pruning.
The essentials in brief:
- use clean and sharp tools
- cut each plant as needed
- Cut back in autumn (only) if overwintered frost-free
