Potted plants should be watered regularly. If you don't have the time or desire to do this, you can buy an irrigation system or build one yourself. Such a system is also useful for a (not too long) vacation.

Are there different watering methods for potted plants?
There are basically three different methods when it comes to self-built irrigation systems. They all work more or less with a water reservoir and are particularly suitable for short-term watering, for example for a short vacation.
Homemade watering systems for potted plants:
- water-tank
- thread watering
- PET bottle with lid
What material do I need?
For the simplest method of watering, all you need is an (old) PET bottle. You construct the thread irrigation with the help of a water container and a thick string or wick. The water reservoir consists of a large plant pot or a zinc tub, each filled with clay granules and water. Inside is the planter, which has a hole in the bottom. These systems do not incur high costs.
How to build the irrigation systems?
With the PET bottle, all you have to do is drill a hole in the lid and fill the bottle with water, then the system is ready to use. Put the filled and tightly closed bottle upside down in the ground, as close as possible to the plant you want to water. Then secure the bottle from tipping over and your self-made irrigation system is ready.(32.95€)
If you opt for string watering, you will need a little space next to your planter. Fill a bowl or small bucket with water and place the container next to the potted plant. Put one end of a thick thread in the water container and stick the other end in the soil right next to the plant. This allows the roots to suck up water as needed.
tips
Be sure to test before you go on holiday whether your irrigation system is working properly. If not, improve the system or ask your neighbor to take care of the potted plants while you're away.
