With its delicate fragrance and colorful flowers, the freesia is a popular beauty. She is originally from South Africa, so she loves the sun and warmth. It thrives in this climate, but unfortunately it is not found everywhere.

Freesias also thrive in the garden during the warm season

Can I plant freesias in my garden?

In the past, freesias were mainly traded as cut flowers or houseplants, but nowadays there are also varieties for the garden. But they are not winter hardy.

Which location is suitable for freesias?

Ideally, the location for your freesias should be warm, sunny and well protected from rain. This can also be on the balcony or terrace, so cultivate the freesias in pots or tubs. Well-drained, humus-rich and moist soil with a neutral pH is particularly suitable.

How should I care for my freesias?

Although freesias are not exactly easy to care for, they do not require too much trouble either. Most care is given to the tubers. If these are not stored correctly, they often do not flower later on.

Freesias need a lot of moisture. When watering, however, it is important to ensure that the leaves and flowers remain as dry as possible. Water containing fluoride should not be used, it will damage your freesias. During the growth phase, give the plants a low dose of a potassium-rich fertilizer about every four weeks.

How should I overwinter freesias?

Only the tubers of the freesia are overwintered. Only when the leaves have withered can they be cut off. Store the dried tubers in a straw box. The winter quarters should be well ventilated, the temperature should be around 15 °C to 20 °C.

The essentials in brief:

  • suitable for garden planting
  • not hardy but very sensitive to frost
  • ideal location: sunny, warm, sheltered from rain
  • Soil: humic, loose, moist
  • Planting time: late May, early June
  • Flowering period: August to October
  • be sure to overwinter optimally, otherwise there is only a small chance of renewed flowering

tips

Be sure to buy quality tubers that are large and undamaged, otherwise the chance of successful flowering is pretty slim.
