The Ficus ginseng (bot. Ficus microcarpa) is poisonous like all other Ficus species. For adult humans, it is only slightly poisonous and, thanks to its bitter taste, relatively harmless. But it can also cause skin irritation.

How does poisoning manifest itself?

In an adult, serious poisoning from the easy-care Ficus Ginseng is hardly to be feared, because consumption is almost impossible due to the bitter taste. In children, however, even a relatively small dose is dangerous. Gastrointestinal complaints with nausea, vomiting and diarrhea occur quite quickly. If you suspect it, consult a pediatrician immediately.

Not only the consumption but also the skin contact with the ficus ginseng is harmful to health. Avoid direct contact with the milky plant sap, it is very irritating to the skin and mucous membranes. It is therefore better to wear gloves when cutting and repotting. If plant juice does get on your skin, then rinse it off immediately with plenty of fresh water.

Symptoms of poisoning in brief:

  • dizziness
  • nausea
  • stomach cramps
  • Vomit
  • diarrhea

How does Ficus Ginseng work in animals?

Green plants often exert an irresistible attraction on animals. This can easily be fatal for the animals with Ficus Ginseng, because even three to four leaves can represent a lethal dose for small rodents. At least signs of paralysis easily occur with this amount. Cats are at risk of kidney failure. Ficus ginseng is also poisonous to birds.

tips

Be sure to place a Ficus Ginseng out of the reach of (small) children and pets, this is the best way to avoid the risk of poisoning.
