Growing and propagating your own houseplants can be a fulfilling hobby. The Ficus Ginseng can also be propagated by yourself. This is possible both by sowing seeds and by cutting cuttings.
Propagation via cuttings is quite promising for Ficus GinsengWhere can I get viable seeds from?
The biggest difficulty when sowing the Ficus Ginseng is probably the procurement of the seeds, they are not very common in the trade. You are most likely to find what you are looking for on the Internet, possibly under the "Bonsai" category, because the plant can be grown well as a bonsai.
But search with the correct botanical name: Ficus microcarpa, because there are numerous other Ficus species and the risk of confusion is sometimes great. Incidentally, the German name for the Ficus Ginseng is Laurel Feige.
Sow Ficus Ginseng
The sowing itself is not difficult, you only have to scatter the fine-grained seeds on the moist growing substrate and press them down a little. Now keep the seeds evenly moist and warm. At about 25 °C they germinate after about two to three weeks. Strong young plants can be transplanted into normal potting soil.
The most important thing about sowing:
- seeds difficult to obtain
- Sowing possible
- Germination temperature: approx. 25 °C
- Germination time: approx. 2 to 3 weeks
Propagation by cuttings
Vegetative propagation is promising. To do this, cut young strong shoots of at least five centimeters in length from your Ficus Ginseng. Remove all but the top two pairs of leaves. To further reduce energy consumption, you can shorten the leftover leaves a little. Your cuttings should root within two to three weeks at around 25 °C in evenly moist growth substrate.
Pull cuttings step by step:
- Cut head or partial cuttings at least 5 cm long
- defoliate except for 2 pairs of leaves
- If necessary, shorten the remaining leaves
- stick in moist growing substrate
- pull transparent foil over the breeding pot
- keep evenly moist
- Rooting temperature: approx. 25 °C to 30 °C
- Rooting period: approx. 2 to 3 weeks
tips
When the humidity is high, the cuttings of your Ficus Ginseng root particularly easily. Regular airing reduces the risk of mold growth.
