Dried moss makes the decoration ideas just bubble. From the classic equipment for the Christmas crib to home-made moss hearts as table decorations. Read here how easy it is to dry moss. This is how it works in the air, on the heater and in the oven.

Moss is a popular decorative element

Drying for free - this is how it works in the air

Types of moss such as peat moss or liver moss are perfect for drying and creative decoration. These can be found in thick cushions in shady places in the forest and garden. Please remove no more than half of each cushion so that the moss plant can regenerate. To air dry the moss:

  • Place the fresh moss in a colander
  • Douse with boiling water to get rid of pests
  • Spread out on kitchen paper

The moss dries within a few days in a dark, airy place.

Dry crib moss on the heater in winter

If the radiators are active in winter anyway, they also act as a drying device for your crib moss. To do this, double or triple fold absorbent kitchen paper and place it on a warm radiator. Spread out your moss yield from the forest or garden on it. Rotate the moss once a day until it is completely dry.

Drying moss in the oven - this is how it works

If you're in a hurry, dry your moss harvest in the oven. First, a rinse with boiling water is recommended to remove any possible pests. Then line a baking sheet with kitchen paper and place the well-drained moss on it. Turn the upholstery every 10 minutes on the lowest setting with air circulation. Please leave the oven door slightly open.

tips

Air-dried moss loses its rich green color. To permanently preserve the plant, make a 2:1 mixture of glycerin and denatured alcohol. The collected moss from the forest is soaked in it for 10 minutes. After drying for 2 to 3 days in the airy, dark room, it can be used.
