The multifaceted variety of pea varieties gives the hobby gardener plenty of scope when creating the planting plan. The genus can be divided into three large groups for systematic chronological orientation with regard to sowing and harvesting.

The most important dates in pea cultivation

Shell peas - dried peas
The robust varieties tolerate frosty temperatures. This is how they start the planting season:

  • Sow early/mid March
  • Harvest from May

wrinkled peas
Thanks to their fine consistency, they are ideal for fresh consumption and serve as a coveted snack for children.

  • Sow from mid-April
  • Harvest from June

snow peas
The name says it all for this extra tender type of pea, which is eaten with its pod.

  • Sow early/mid April
  • Harvest in June and July

Most pea varieties allow reseeding, the ripe pods of which you can harvest from August. You lay a few winter varieties in October to collect them next May.
