Peas are able to climb. Depending on the variety, they climb up to 180 cm high. To protect them against wind throw, a climbing aid is indispensable. With simple means you can construct the practical support within a short time.

Simple trellis made of wood - naturally beautiful

Who says that a trellis for peas can be limited to its practical function? You are welcome to enrich the visual appearance of the kitchen garden. With the natural building material wood, the project succeeds excellently.

  • keep the clippings from the last pruning until the peas are planted
  • Stick strong branches into the ground next to the seed furrows
  • for higher-growing varieties, place two opposite rows of brushwood that lean against each other

Alternatively, drive two thick branches into the ground at the ends of the row of plants. Nail another rod across the top and bottom. Then attach sisal cords and the nature-loving climbing aid for peas is complete.

Wire mesh is thus transformed into a climbing structure

Some pea varieties develop a significant biomass by the time they are harvested. They demand a more stable construction. If there is any wire mesh (€14.99) left over from the last fence construction, use the material for a climbing aid.

  • An appropriately high and wide piece of wire mesh is stretched between 2 stable posts
  • less vigorous pea varieties find support in a large-meshed net without tearing it
  • Raffia tape or plastic cable ties serve as fastening material

Where there is no bed available to plant peas in, a large tub serves as a cultivation area. In this case, simply repurpose the classic climbing aid for roses. Shaping as an obelisk, pyramid or round arch allows the pea plants to climb decoratively.

This way a clump of plants finds enough support

If you prefer your peas indoors, we recommend planting them in beds in small clusters of five as a nest. If the variety grows taller than 40 cm, place a richly branched branch in the middle. The young plants gratefully use it to climb up.

tips and tricks

Always pulling climbing aids for peas straight through the bed seems quite static in the long run. If the climbing construction runs diagonally, this simple design variant immediately provides a visual change.
