If you want to implement your elderberry, you should keep various aspects in mind. If the right preparation is missing or if the transplanting takes place at the wrong time, the wild fruit tree will no longer grow. Learn how to do it here.

When is the right time to implement?
Choose an appointment during your elderberry's juice dormancy. In this way you reduce the stress on the wood and thus increase the chances of success. A frost-free, overcast day in late winter is perfect.
Targeted preparatory work
A month before the actual implementation, the course is set for a successful course of the campaign. How to do it:
- Use a spade to cut out the roots all around, at the height of the eaves
- then rinse thoroughly for 1 hour
- loosen the root ball well with the digging fork
The preparatory work is completed with a courageous pruning, which compensates for the loss of root volume.
Transplant elderberry professionally
The soil at the new location will be prepared on the selected date. This includes a deep loosening, in connection with the removal of roots, stones and weeds. In these steps you continue the work:
- create a planting pit with twice the volume of the root ball
- enrich the excavation with compost and horn shavings (32.93€) or stable manure
- Dig a trench around the elder down to root depth
- use the spade to lift out the root ball with as much soil as possible
Ideally, a helping hand will be available to pull a sack over the roots and lift the wood into the wheelbarrow. In the new place, plant the elder exactly as deep as it was before. This is followed by plenty of watering. A generous layer of bark mulch or compost will help the plant establish itself quickly.
Care after transfer
Adequate water supply is the focus of care work after an elder has been transplanted. Water regularly, but without causing waterlogging. If a new shoot appears in the spring, you can be sure that the move has been a success.
tips and tricks
The root system of an elder does not go deep, but all the more extensive. If you plant the wood immediately with a root barrier, later moving or removing it is much less complicated. Those who shy away from investing in the high-quality geotextile (€107.71) put the root ball in the ground with a large mortar trough without a bottom.
