Banana chips can be conjured up in no time with various heat sources. We reveal three practical methods. Process ripe bananas in just a few simple steps.

You need that

Freshly ripe bananas are best. They may have small brown spots.

Further ingredients:

  • lemon juice
  • Nutmeg, cinnamon or salt (according to taste)
  • Coconut or olive oil (for microwave only)

Tools:

  • knife
  • cutting board
  • wire grate
  • possibly vegetable slicer

heat source:

Depending on availability, use an oven with a baking sheet or a microwave. Alternatively, bananas can be air dried in summer temperatures using a drying frame.

Variant 1: oven

The oven is preheated to between 50 and 90 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, prepare the banana.

  • Chips: 1/4 inch thick slices
  • crispy chips: 0.3 centimeters

Banana pieces can be broken by hand. If the banana is too soft and mushy, a short break of 5 to 10 minutes in the fridge will help. All pieces are briefly bathed in lemon juice. This way they keep their golden color.

The prepared bananas are placed on a wire rack in the oven (middle rack). Slide a baking sheet underneath. The fruit releases excess water during drying. This catches the sheet metal. After baking, the finished treats cool down directly on the grid.

Baking time:

  • Chips: 1 to 3 hours
  • Pieces: 6 to 12 hours

Tips:

  • Banana pieces have a long drying time in the oven. For security reasons, this should be done during the day when you are present.
  • Spices can be added before placing in the oven.
  • An airtight container is suitable for storage.
  • Shelf life: several months

Option 2: microwave

Cut the peeled banana into thin slices (about 0.6 centimeters). Now a dinner plate gets a thin oil coating. Then arrange the bananas. These must not touch each other.

Cook in the microwave on the highest setting for 1 minute. The bananas release moisture and become soft. The next step is to turn the chips over. At this point, a taste note can be added.

The process is repeated (drying - turning) at intervals of 30 seconds. The fresh banana chips are then ready to be eaten. They only stay fresh and crispy for a day.

Tips:

  • slices that are too thin will burn quickly

Variant 3: summer sun

Requirements:

  • at least 2 days dry, hot climate
  • clear sky
  • at least 32 degrees Celsius
  • low humidity
  • Time: maximum 7 days

The banana slices should be between 1/2 and 1/4 inch thick. A quick soak in lemon juice will prevent tanning. Varied creations are created with spices.

Place the banana chips next to each other on a drying rack with food-safe mesh. The ideal place with direct sunlight and free from environmental pollution is the roof of your own house. On the second day, turn the chips. They are dried indoors overnight. Banana chips will stay crisp for several months in an airtight container.
