She is the hit in the individual garden design. A vine not only serves as an opulent facade greening, but also provides a delicious grape harvest. We answer all important questions about the professional planting of grapes here.

When is the best planting time?

The time window for the optimal planting time is open from the beginning of April to mid-May. This applies to container plants in beds and tubs on the balcony. Put bare root plants in the ground in autumn.

Which location preferences characterize a bunch of grapes?

A grapevine unfolds its full splendor in the sunniest and warmest place the garden has to offer. Outside of mild wine-growing regions, you should plant a vine on the south wall of the house or set it up in the atrium courtyard. The soil is humus, rich in nutrients and well drained. A light lime content up to a pH of 7.5 is welcome.

Which substrate is recommended in the bucket?

In order for a bunch of grapes to thrive in the bucket as desired, we recommend a structurally stable substrate. Good potting soil, enriched with compost and a handful of perlite,(37.51€) meets the requirements perfectly.

In which work steps is planted correctly?

You will give a bunch of grapes the best starting position if you plant in this sequence:

  • loosen the soil 2 spades deep in the autumn of the previous year
  • Work in a good portion of compost, adding stone flour, algae lime and some sand
  • carefully weed the soil at the site at planting time
  • soak the potted vine with the root ball in water for 12 hours
  • dig a pit 30-35 centimeters deep for planting
  • insert the potted vine and water

A bunch of grapes is only planted so deep that the grafting point is 4-5 centimeters above the ground. The planting distance is between 100 and 200 centimetres, depending on the grape variety. Finally, install the climbing aid.

What should be considered when planting in containers?

Here it is important to effectively prevent the formation of harmful waterlogging. Therefore, create a drainage over the bottom opening before you fill in the recommended substrate. Suitable materials are pebbles, grit, (€46.95), expanded clay (€19.73) or potsherds.

What propagation techniques are possible?

The issue of propagation goes hand in hand with the threat of phylloxera in grapevines. Within wine-growing areas you should only consider grafting onto a phylloxera-resistant rootstock for the offspring. In other parts of Germany, hobby gardeners often decide to propagate by cuttings or sinkers.

It is also potentially possible to extract it from the seeds of a grape. Since there is no single-variety propagation here, this method has a more experimental character.

When is harvest time?

The grape harvest extends over a long period of time and is subject to a variety of influences. In general, grapes can be harvested from August to November.
