In the herb and scented garden, the seductive types of mint are the icing on the cake. How boring to buy ready-made plants! Personal breeding is much more exciting. We will tell you here how easy it is to do this by sowing seeds and cuttings.

Cleverly sow mint seeds - this is how you do it right
While sowing does not succeed with most noble varieties, you can grow magnificent plants from seeds of pure mint species. Suitable candidates are, for example, water mint or spearmint. Proceed with these steps:
- in March fill a seed tray with peat sand or lean seed soil
- Moisten well with water from the spray bottle
- mix the fine seeds with bird sand and sow
You simply press the light germinators, put a plastic bag over the container and place it in the partially shaded window seat. At a pleasant 20 degrees Celsius, germination begins within 2 weeks.
Cultivate cuttings in the bed - this is how rooting works
From mid-May, mint cuttings with a length of 15-20 centimeters thrive directly in the bed. Choose a partially shaded, sheltered spot in the garden. The soil should be nutritious, humus-rich and well-drained. How to do it right:
- loosen and weed the bed soil thoroughly
- Work in a 5 cm layer of sifted compost
- Plant the cuttings and support them with small wooden sticks
- a planting distance of 40 to 50 centimeters is considered ideal
- sprinkle with water from the spray bottle
All mints are characterized by an invasive character. We recommend planting with a rhizome barrier so that the herbal plant does not spread its root runners throughout the garden. This is a stable geotextile (€107.71) that is placed 50 centimeters deep vertically into the earth in a circle around the planting site. Alternatively, plant each cutting with a large bottomless pot.
tips and tricks
Easily grow mint in a large pot on the balcony. To do this, cut 15 centimeter long cuttings, which are defoliated in the lower half. Rooting progresses quickly in a glass of water. If the delicate root strands are nice and long, plant the young plant in a nutrient-rich, loose substrate in a 30-centimetre pot.
